United Way of Greater Cleveland receives $20 million in matching gifts

08/02/2024

The United Way of Greater Cleveland has announced that its Cleveland Community Fund endowment has raised more than $10 million to secure a $10 million challenge grant from the Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Supporting Foundation.

In August 2022, the Mandel Foundation pledged $10 million, the United Way’s largest pledge ever, to raise additional funds to create the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Fund for Urban Engagement to address the city’s urban engagement strategies. The fund will provide immediate, coordinated assistance to help people needing health, housing, and economic mobility services across Cuyahoga County neighborhoods and communities.

Nearly two-dozen donors pledged to meet the goal, including Cleveland Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam and the Haslam 3 Foundation, which provided a $2 million leadership gift. Platinum-level donors (gifts ranging from $350,001 to $1.5 million) included Karen and Paul Dolan, who own the Cleveland Guardians baseball team, and the Meisel and Pesses Family Foundation.

“This milestone match of the Mandel Supporting Foundation’s historic grant by so many of our board members and donors reinforces further their confidence in our United Way’s direction, strategy, and future,” said United Way of Greater Cleveland board chair Vanessa Whiting, who also pledged a six-figure gift. “We are humbled and thankful to each Mandel Match donor and the Mandel Foundation for their steadfast leadership and commitment to our United Way’s work as long-standing partners, generous champions, and investors in our Cleveland Community Fund endowment, which now exceeds $20 million.”
